Honeymoon to...Santorini, Greece

I have always been fascinated with Greece, and the architecture in Santorini has pique my interest for quite some time. This beautiful Greek island is not only a place of fascinating sights, it is also a top destination for weddings and honeymoons! Located in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades.

Things to Do and Sights to See
The Catholic Quarter in Fira
One of the most beautiful sections in Fira. Not to be missed is the Old Quarter of Kato Fira, a silent maze of little streets bathed in light. Two domes rear up from this terraced cascade of houses: Agios Ioannis church and the Agios Minas.

The Village of Oia
This picturesque village is an amazing place to visit. Filled with dramatic sunsets and narrow passageways, this is a village not to be missed. Trendy boutiques and expensive jewellery shops as well as world class cuisine await you.

Boat Excursions around the island
The ships Bella Aurora & Thalassa offer full or half day boat rides around the island of Santorini. Start the day off with a trip to the volcanic island of Nea Kameni. Once there, you will be greeted by a small steam vent, jagged rocks, a hot springs, and an unparalleled view of Santorini. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes as the island is quite rocky. The real fun in these boat rides is the cruising. Enjoy wonderful food, a hospitable crew and a serenade by a lone saxophone player as you cruise to Oia to watch the sunset.

Ancient Thira
This 11th century BC Dorian settlement includes remains from Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Accessible by a steep, narrow road and a small hike, this location not only offers ancient ruins, but amazing views as well.

Akrotiri
This ancient city was covered in a heap of volcanic ash in an eruption in 1866. Professor Spyridon Marinatos unearthed the complete city in 1967, but died in an accident at the same site in 1974. He is buried alongside his life's work.

Santorini Beaches
Most beached in Santorini are made up of volcanic sand, meaning they are black or red sand. There are so many different options for beach time, this article has some great advice as well as many pictures of all the beaches on Santorini.

Food
Well for a start, you can image the typical greek salad comprised of amazing olives, feta cheese, tomatos, cucumber, red onion and seasoned with salt, black pepper, oregano, and basil and dressed with olive oil. Thats only the beginning. Beef dishes are not common as the Greek terrain has tended to favour the breeding of goats and sheep over cattle. A variety of cheeses are also used in Greek cusine including Feta, Kasseri, Kefalotyri, Graviera, Anthotyros, Manouri, Metsovone and Mizithra. For a complete list of common appetizers, soups and main dishes visit this site.

Where to Stay
Vedema Resort
The colors and decor of this hotel is reason enough to stay here. Built around a 400 year old winery, this resort has countless things to discover. Take a relaxing day at the Spa, savor Mediterranean cuisine in one of seven restraunts and bars, relax on the hotels private beach or one of the many pools, play tennis or take a mountain bike ride around the island. With so many things to do, I'm sure you won't hunger for activity.

Ikes Hotel
Traditional Greek appartments, all with private terraces. Other ammenities include swimming pool, fully-equipped kitchenettes, direct dial telephone, satellite TV.
A welcome drink and a basket of fruits are offered uppon arrival.

Enigma Apartments and Suites
Located in Fira, the capital of Santorini, this hotel is all about making your stay the very best it can be. A large terrace with chaise lounges, umbrellas and tables, where you can relax and enjoy a cool drink, while gazing at the magnificent Caldera, the volcano, and the Aegean Sea, a vista that is particularly beautiful during sunset, is just part of what you can expect from Enigma.

Quick Facts
Language: Greek is the official language in Santorini. English is spoken almost everywhere throughout the island. French, German and Spanish is limited to the major tourist centers.
Money: The national currency is the euro. Shopkeepers frequently accept American currency. For day-to-day touring and tipping, however, visitors should carry an adequate supply of euros. Hotels, banks and the airport have facilities for changing foreign currency but not always traveller’s cheques.
Weather: The climate in Santorini is deceptive. It's similar to the Bay Area in California, mildly hot during the day, cooler at night. The climate is mild and dry. Usually, the summer with bright and sunny weather lasts from from April to October and is bright and sunny, but a fresh breeze is often blowing in the evenings and brings cooler temperatures. The weather is generally pleasant with very rare rain falling from April until October and average temperatures of 80-90 degrees.
Get there: Fly into Athens. From there, there are several flights daily with Olympic Airways and Aegean Airlines from Athens to Santorini. The duration of the flight is approximately 25 minutes. There are also connecting flights to Mykonos, Rhodes and Heraklio. The airport of Santorini is 8km from Thera, but there is a bus service to get there.

Honeymoon to...Belize

Belize is a peaceful, adventurer's paradise located between Mexico and Guatemala. The people of this beautiful country have protected more than 40% of the land as parks and natural reserves, therefore, Belize is filled with tropical forests rich with wildlife, majestic mountains, mysterious Maya temples, and diving and fishing experiences beyond comparison. Belize is a wonderful place to visit, and is an ideal destination for the traveler looking to stretch a dollar without compromising fun and adventure. By reader request from Inna, here are some wonderful things to do and see in Belize

Sights to see:
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
This beautiful wildlife sanctuary is known as the "Jaguar Preserve", and was established in 1984 as a way to protect a large jaguar population. Although you may not see a jaguar, or other member of the cat family, you will always see beautiful birds and other herbivorous animals. Beautiful flowers and plants are also present in this jungle like setting.
If you are an animal lover, you won't want to miss out on the other wonderful animal sanctuaries: Community Baboon Sanctuary, Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and of course, the Belize Zoo!

Mountain Pine Ridge
Mountain Pine Ridge is 300 square miles of forest reserve that offers a river, pool, caves, nature trails, as well as numerous small streams and waterfalls. Besides magnificent views and cooler temperatures, you can also take a dip in one of the many refreshing pools or streams.

Maya Ruins
Belize is blessed with an outstanding archaeological heritage of Maya temples and palaces. There are 6 different sites within the country to view these mysterious ruins.

The Blue Hole
This "hole" in the ocean is the most popular dive site in all of Belize. Originally a cave, the roof fell in some 10,000 years ago as the land receded into the sea. The Blue Hole is nearly a perfectly circular hole 1,000 feet in diameter and 412 feet deep and can be seen from outer space!

Belize is broken down into 6 districts, with 9 different tourist regions. They all contain different sights to see and wonderful things to do. Please see a list of them, as well as things to do in each region here.

Food
Throughout Belize, travelers will encounter all kinds of dining options. From the creole cuisine to international fare, there is sure to be something for everyone. Here is a great article on different types of food in Belize.

Where to stay
Ka'ana Botique Resort
This luxury resort features sumptuous dining, spa services and many different tour and activity options. Centrally located in the Maya Mountains of Belize's Cayo District.

Hidden Valley Inn
This luxury hotel is situated within a private nature reserve and is also one of the only resorts whose facilities, trails and jungle waterfalls are reserved for exclusive use by resident guests. They even have a honeymoon package which includes lunch set up at your choice of private waterfall for the day, complete with white linen, fresh flowers, sparkling wine and any transfers required to and from the waterfall. Read more about the honeymoon package here.

Blackbird Resort
This 166 acre resort features diving, snorkeling, kayaking and anything else you can dream up on this beautiful piece of land. Fresh island cuisine is prepared with native foods and is served in the main dining area.

There are so many choices of places to stay in Belize. Trip Advisor is a great place to get started when deciding where to stay.

Quick facts
Language: English is the official language of Belize, although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are widely spoken throughout the country.
Money: The Belize Dollar (BZ$) has a fixed rate of exchange of BZ $2 to US $1. Most hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators will accept U.S. currency, traveler's checks, or credit cards.

Honeymoon to...Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is a city of immense history, located right in the heart of Europe. Its a city filled with Gothic towers, baroque churches and cobble-stone lanes. By reader request from Amy, here are some wonderful sights to see and things to do in Prague. Enjoy!

Sights to see:
Prague Castle
This stunning castle is filled with history, 1100 years to be exact, and so many wonderful things to see. Wander through the breathtaking Royal Gardens, and over to the Summer Palace and St Vitus Cathedral. Be sure to watch the changing of the guard that, supposedly, is set to music reminiscent of a 1960's TV puppet show. Other sights to see are the Basilica of St George, Toy Museum, Powder Tower and the Garden on the Ramparts. With so many things to see I would definitely allot at least a half a day.

Charles Bridge
This bustling pedestrian bridge is filled with musicians, locals, souvenir stands, and beautiful historic figures lining the bridges sides. Plan to visit this bridge in the early evening to to listen to a local jazz band and catch a view of this beautiful glowing city with silhouetted statues in the foreground.

Old Town Square
This popular town square is filled with outdoor restaurants and bars, and surrounded by beautiful churches and homes. Be sure to see the Astronomical Clock (pictured below) where you can see wooden apostles nod past on the hour. Be sure to also check out the Gothic Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, Kinsky Palace and the House of the Stone Bell.

Petrin Hill
This beautiful hill filled with wonderful trails to wander through and beautiful city views. Make sure to get lost in the Maze, and stop in at the Church of St Lawrence to view the fresco ceiling.

St Nicholas Church
Apparently there are 3 churches in Prague called St Nicholas, but only one took 82 years, 3 generations and 1 family to build. This beautiful monument is filled with delightful fresco's and ornate columns. A must see for its amazing interior and architecture.

Off the Beaten Path
With Prauge being like any major city, that is, busy, you may want to take a day or two to get away from the hustle and bustle. The neighborhoods of Vysehrad and Stromovka are virtually camera-happy crowd free. In Stromovka, take a relaxing stroll through the Royal Deer Park (pictured below). With its quiet lanes, duck ponds and weeping willows its a wonderful place to get away from the crowds. Vysehrad has many secluded parks, one of which you can look onto a small board harbour.

Food
Like any other city, there are so many different options when it comes to picking a restaurant. Lunch is the main meal of the day when partaking of the Czech fare. Entres consist of soup, dumplings, sauerkraut and roast pork. If these don't strike your fancy, Prague has many other international options including foods from Afghanistan to Japan.

Where to Stay
Hostel Tyn has a very central location hidden away in a courtyard just off Old Town Square. It is a very affordable place to stay and, due to its desirable location, books up fairly quickly.

Hotel Esplanade is in the mid-range price section, and includes beautiful Art Nouveau style decor and richly decorated rooms. Facilities also include a club bar, restaurant, meeting rooms and a babysitting service. Not that you need that on your honeymoon!

Hotel Elite is on the top end of the price range and its only a block from shopping on Narodni trida.

Hotel Pariz is about as deluxe as they come. With heated bathroom floors and massage facilities, this Art Nouveau beauty will have you feeling like a king and queen in no time. This hotel is centrally located right next to the Powder Tower in Prague Castle.

Quick Facts
Language: Native language is Czech. English is widely spoken in central Prague but not in the outer suburbs or the countryside. Many older citizens also speak German.
Money: Currency is the koruna, or crown.
Weather: The high during summer is around 70 degrees, with an average rainfall of about 2 inches.
Get there: Praha Ruzyne Airport is about 20km west of the city center and is accessible by bus and metro.

Buy the book
I found Best of Prague by Lonely Planet to be extremely helpful when I was searching for information. It is available on Amazon for a pretty good price, especially if you but it used.

Honeymoon to...Quick USA getaways

Honeymoon's don't have to mean travel abroad. There are plenty of wonderful sights and locations to visit right here in the United States. In fact, my husband and I traveled up the California coast on our honeymoon, spending about 4 days in Lake Tahoe. It was so beautiful and a wonderful trip for us! By reader request from Abigail, here are some quick getaways that are affordable and romantic.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

This beautiful park has countless things to do such as exploring the 900+ miles of back country trails, bicycling, boating, horseback riding, picnicking, viewing natural points of interest such as Old Faithful and the upper and lower falls of Yellowstone River. Besides Yellowstone, any National Park would be a fun choice for a honeymoon, for those looking for a little outdoor adventure.
Where to stay
Camping is always an option, but maybe not as romantic as renting a cabin on beautiful Yellowstone Lake. Rates for cabins start at $125 per day. For more information on where to lodge, click here.
Weather
During the summer, the usual temperature is in the 70's, but it can get a little hotter, reaching the 80's. Nights are typically cool, with some below freezing temperatures in the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoons.

Depending upon where you live, you can either fly into Idaho Falls, Idaho, or Bozeman or Billings, Montana.
For more information on Yellowstone National Park please visit this website.

New Orleans, Louisiana

History abounds in New Orleans, with sumptuous food and a great atmosphere. Visit the French Quarter and view glorious architecture, visit the French Market and take a trip down Bourbon Street. Take one of the many city tours including the culinary tour, riverboat tour, or plantation tour. Trust me, you will never be board in this amazing city.
Where to stay
The possibilities are endless. It really depends on what district interests you most. This website list many hotels and I have found it helpful in narrowing a hotel down.

The average high temperature during the summer is 90, and the low is around 73.
How to get there
Check with your travel agent for flight arrangements.
For more information on New Orleans, please visit this very in depth website. The website also has a fun little video on the homepage that tells about things to do and see.

Santa Barbara, California

Named the American Riviera, this city is full of romance and beautiful things to see and do. I did not put this location because I am from here, it really is a wonderful place to honeymoon. =) Besides beautiful beaches there are so many other things to do and see. Take a walk down State Street for an amazing shopping experience, visit the historic Santa Barbara Mission or Botanical Gardens, visit the Santa Barbara Zoo or hop on a whale watching excursion to Anacapa Island, eat at one of many divine restaurants in the city. Other attractions outside the city are the Santa Barbara County Wine Country, where beautiful winerys await you, Solvang, a Danish village about 30 minutes away, Lake Cachuma, about 25 minutes away, Summerland, a fun antique shopping town about 15 minutes away. I could really go on and on about what to do here! For more information visit this website.
Where to stay
There are so many choices. If you are willing to splurge, I would recommend the Bacara Resort and Spa or Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort. El Capitan Canyon is about 15 minutes from Santa Barbara and is a very unique and beautiful place to stay. Bath Street Inn is a charming bed and breakfast located near the downtown area.
Weather
Santa Barbara boasts one of the most pleasant year-round climates in the country ranging from mid-60's to mid-70's year round. There is an occasional day when the temperature jumps into the 80's, but it isn't too often.
How to get there
Santa Barbara has a small airport that takes direct flights to select major cities. You can also fly into LAX (Los Angeles) and drive about 2 hours to Santa Barbara, or you can connect at LAX and fly in to Santa Barbara Airport.
For more information please visit this website.

Orlando, Florida

Besides Disney World, Orlando has so many fun things to do and see! Visit The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, explore the headwaters of the Florida Everglades on an Orlando air boat adventure, learn to Salsa and Merengue at Latin Quarter and even visit Epcot Center. With so much to do and see, you'll wish you had more time to be there!
Where to stay
Again, there are so many possibilities. Visit this website for more information.
Weather
The average high temperature during the summer is 90, with a humidity of about 60%.
How to get there
Typically, you would fly into Orlando International Airport, but check with your travel agent about this.

The United States is full of wonderful vacation spots. If you are working with a travel agent, they can also give you some popular places for honeymoons within the United States. I know Hawaii and Alaska are part of the United States, but this post I just focused on locations statewide.
Does anyone have somewhere else to add to my list? Leave me a comment and give your input, I'd love to know what you think!

Honeymoon to...Curacao

Update!
Curacao was voted one of the Top Destinations for 2008 by Trip Advisor.

Curacao (pronounced cure-a-sow) is a beautiful island in the Caribbean, located 30 miles off the coast of Venezuela. It is one of the ABC islands in the Caribbean, Aruba and Bonaire being the others. My husband and I had the privilege of visiting this wonderful island last April and we loved every minute of it. The people on this island are so incredibly friendly and laid back. I didn't meet a single rude or hurried person, everyone was so friendly and fun! Here are some pictures we took and some information of things to do and how to get there.

Where to stay: Although there are many wonderful hotels in Curacao, we stayed at the Marriott in Piscadera Bay. We LOVED it. We had the all inclusive package which I highly recommend! The hotel is right on the beach and about 15 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from town. Besides having a top location, great restaurants and a wonderfully friendly staff, the hotel itself is breathtaking and fairly reasonably priced compared to the other hotels on the island. For more information on the hotel visit their website. (Above is the front of the hotel, below is looking out of the open air lobby to the pool and beach)

The capital is Willemstad and is divided into two halves by an ocean bay. The capital is nicknamed "Little Amsterdam" due to its architecture. The island is Dutch owned and the currency is the Netherlands Antillean Guilder.

The floating market is an array of schooners that come over from Venezuela and sell produce. This takes place Monday-Friday and is a great place to get local fruit and some great pictures!

The Jewish neighborhood is a fun place to visit. When the island was first established it was primarily used for slave trade by the Jewish settlers. The old homes are now being restored and are so beautiful. Above is a picture of whats called The Wedding Cake House! The man's wife wanted a house that looked like a wedding cake and she got it!

The Curacao distillery is where they make the genuine Curacao Blue liquor. It's a fun place to visit (even though I don't drink) to see how its made and all the other colors and flavors they offer! Plus, you get to sample what you like and buy it too!

Little Knip beach is one of the many breathtaking beaches in Curacao.

Be sure you eat at one of the many wonderful restaurants in Curacao. We took an island tour and ate at this little place pictured above. It was the best spaghetti I have ever had.

The Hato Caves are such a historic and interesting place to visit. Discovered by slaves, they were used by the slaves as a hideout. The neatest thing about them? Besides that they were formed underwater, you can still see the black ceilings from the slaves torches. It is so fun to see and you can actually feel that these people were there hiding out at one point in time. Also, a colony of long nosed fruit bats live in the caves, which you can see on your tour. =)

The countryside is fully of wonderful sights such as these cute houses pictured above. Old plantation homes are also interesting to see, as well as the very first house on the island built by slaves for slaves pictured below.

Some basic information
Language: The locals of Curacao speak Papiamentu, a native language. The official language is Dutch and English is widely spoken. In fact we didn't meet anyone who didn't speak English. The children in school there are taught English, Dutch and Papiamentu, so most people there are tri-lingual!
Island size: 38 miles long and 3-5 miles wide.
Currency: Netherlands Antillean Guilder, but the U.S. dollar is also accepted at some locations.
Temperature: Its hot! The average temperature is 80 but it is extremely humid, as a tropical island would be and the sun is very hot. When we were there in April, a few days we had cloud cover and it was nice, but then the sun would peak through and it was hot! Being close to the equator the sun is a lot stronger!
How to get there: We took a flight out of LAX to Miami International Airport, and from there flew directly to Curacao. All flights going to and from Curacao fly out of Miami so you will need to connect there, if you don't already live there. The flight from Miami to Curacao is about 2 hours, since it is located in the southwestern part of the Caribbean.
Renting a car: This is a really easy task and I would recommend it. Although driving can be an adventure! Unlike in the United States, drivers honk at other drivers to say hello! We thought we were making a lot of people angry until we realized what was going on!

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend Curacao as a honeymoon or travel destination. If you are considering going, or have any questions I would love to answer them for you! I have nothing but good things to say about this place. =)
