Invitation Know How

Invitations are one of the most important aspects of your wedding. They are the first glimpse into your event that your guests will see. Furthermore, they also let your guests know that there is even an event taking place! Lets face it, if you didn't send an invitation, quite possibly you wouldn't have anyone to celebrate with you!

Besides being the introduction to your event, your invitation should also reflect who you are as a couple. Custom invitation designers are the best at personalizing invitations for you since that's their job. If you are not hiring an invitation designer, just make sure to pick an invitation that not only reflects your personality, but also the atmosphere you wish to have at your event. For example, you wouldn't order a fairytale theme invitation for a wedding you plan on being glamorous and chic.

Here are some other things to consider when ordering your invitations:

When should I order my invitations?
Generally 4-6 months before your wedding date. If going the custom route then as soon as possible. Custom designers like to have as much time as possible to work with you on your perfect invitation.

How many invitations should I order?
Figure one per family plus about 20-25 extra. These are for people you may have forgotten to invite, for someone your mom decides to add to the list at the last minute and also as keepsakes for you and your family.

When should I mail out my invitations?
Anywhere from 2-3 months before your wedding. If you send a save the date, invitations can go out around the 2 month range.

Do I need a reception card?
Reception cards are generally used when your reception location is different than your ceremony location. However, if you are trying to save money and/or be eco-friendly, the reception information can go directly on the invitation.

If you are using a piece of a plant, or something like that (as it looks like you did in the red invitation pictured) how much in advance should the invitation be sent? Tips on keeping the "vegitation" or whatever from drying? Or is it best to use dried?? Thanks.

I love those custom invitations like the first one...but of course cost is always a factor. How lucky to have such beautiful invites, though! =)

To answer your question regarding using a plant on the invitation:
The red invitation above does have a piece of plant behind the vellum, good eyes! To make things easier dried is the best way to go. That particular piece is dried, so rushing the sending process was not a factor. However, if you do intend on using pieces of a plant or real flowers, sometimes, depending upon the delicacy of the plant and where it is placed on or in the invitation, you may need to overnight it. Also be sure to pack it carefully and well so it doesn't get ruined in the shipping process. (i.e. lots of bubble wrap and peanuts!) Sometimes it helps to include an ice pack to help keep a real flower fresh.
Hope that answered your question!

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like dried "something" would be easier and a little more affordable.
